SCO Security Bulletin 2000.01
Buffer Overflow Vulnerabilities in OpenServer pkg* tools
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Multiple Vulnerabilities Found In SCO OpenServer
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

I. Description

There was recently a report of a vulnerability in UnixWare7
that allowed acccess to read restricted files (/etc/shadow) via an exploit
using crafted buffer overflows against some of the pkg* suite of tools.

While OpenServer does not have exactly the same security vulnerability it
does supply these tools and they are susceptible to the same set
of buffer overflow issues.

Files susceptible are
    /usr/bin/pkginfo
    /usr/bin/pkgparam
    /usr/bin/pkgchk
    /usr/bin/pkgadd
    /usr/bin/pkgrm
    /usr/adm/install/bin/pkginstall
    /usr/adm/install/bin/pkgremove

II. Impact

Possible exploits using buffer overflow of the above packaging utilities

III. Releases

OpenServer version 5.0.5.

IV. Solution

SCO is providing an interim patch to address this issue in the form of a
System Security Enhancement (SSE) package.

SSE055 contains replacement binaries for OpenServer5.0.5, and is
available for Internet download via anonymous ftp and http.

You can download the SSE package as follows:

Anonymous ftp (World Wide Web URL):

    ftp://ftp.sco.COM/SSE/sse055.ltr (cover letter, ASCII text)
ftp://ftp.sco.COM/SSE/sse055.tar.Z (new binaries, compressed tar file)

Checksums (sum -r):

	56781 4 sse055.ltr
	53809 1489 sse055.tar.Z

V. Updates

This bulletin is available for anonymous ftp download from
